We will be visiting Dr. Scream's Haunted Houses tonight at Myrtle Waves. There are 3 haunted houses at this one park. The cost is $15 per person. That is a $5 discount from the normal price. We will be meeting at the church at 6:30, and returning at 9. Family members and friends are welcome to join us for the fun. We need drivers to transport scouts and friends to the park and back. Parents, please come out and give us a hand. There will not be a scout meeting for those not interested in going to the haunted houses, so if you do not wish to go to the haunted houses, please make other plans. We will be having our fundraiser this weekend at the Socastee Heritage Festival which is centered around the swing bridge in Socastee. Scouts need to come in full uniform. We need everyone to arrive at 8AM, and plan to stay until 6PM when the festival ends. Our booth number is 185. Our booth will be located on the Forestbrook side of the bridge. In order to access our booth, your parents will need to enter the festival from the Forestbrook side of the bridge, as traffic will not be permitted to drive across the bridge. Please bring money for lunch. This will be a very long day, so please be prepared. A chair would be a great idea. If you have any questions. please contact Mr. Mike at (843) 254-9222. |

Tonight we will be focusing on registering for the upcoming camporee, and working on Citizenship in the Community Merit Badge. The details for the camporee are as follows: 2011 Chicora Spring Camporee March 25 - 27 Santee Coastal Reserve near McClellanville, SC website: http://alturl.com/5vvr5 Fees are due tonight. Youth: $45 with a tshirt, $35 without a tshirt Adults: $35 with a tshirt, $25 without a tshirt Citizenship in the Community Merit Badge Over the last two Mondays, we have been working on requirements towards the Eagle required merit badge, Citizenship in the Community. So far we have completed the following requirements. 1, 2a, and are working on 5. Tonight, we will be working towards completing requirements: 2b, 5, and 6. We will be attending a county council meeting on Tuesday, March 15th. We will be meeting at the church at 5PM in order to attend the meeting at 6PM. If you are late, you will have to find your own ride, so please be on time. Council member, Bob Grabowski, has entered a resolution in support of Troop 856, and it will be presented at that time, live on TV. Yes, your sons will be on TV. We would like for all of the troop members to attend this presentation in their complete uniforms. That will include shirt, pants, neckerchief and belt. This is the first time that our troop has ever received such a prestigious recognition, so we do ask that everyone attends. Parents and family members are also welcome to attend this special event. After the resolution is presented to the troop, the troop members will sit through a portion of the council meeting to complete requirement 3a of the merit badge. OA Spring Fellowship OA Spring Fellowship will be held March 18 - 20 at Camp Coker. The cost for the event is $20 is you register by March 14th. registrations after that date will be assessed a $10 late fee and will cost $30. The flyer for this event is attached to this email. |
Meeting Monday, January 24 We will be having a meeting on Monday night at 7PM. We will be meeting in the Fellowship Hall behind the church, as a church activity will be happening in our normal meeting room. A Board of Review will be held during the meeting for those who are eligible. Camp-out at Little Pee Dee State Park, Friday, January 28 - 30 We will be having a camp-out at Little Pee Dee State Park this coming weekend. There will be several other troops in attendance. A flour war will be held during the camp-out. Much fun will be had by all that attend. We will be meeting at the church at 4:30PM on Friday, and the caravan will be pulling out of the parking lot at 5PM. We will be returning to Socastee Elementary at noon on Sunday. The fee for the camp-out is $30. Permission slips will be handed out on Monday during the scout meeting, and must be signed and returned before the camp-out on Friday. |

All scouts, FIrst Class and above are required to attend the PLC meeting. All scouts below First Class will receive First Aid instruction in the meeting room. December 4th will be our Good Turn Project. We will be doing Scouting For Food in the morning, and then visiting Kingston Nursing Home for Christmas Caroling. Our Scouting For Food bag pickup will be held on the following Saturday, December 11. All scouts are encouraged to attend. Scouts who attend will receive service hours for participating. The haunted houses are located at the old Waccamaw Pottery. We will need a few adults to drive, so parents, please come out prepared to transport kids to and from the haunted house. Mr. Brock will be collecting money for the camporee. The fee for the camporee is $55. If you have not paid, this will be your last opportunity to pay. Remember, this Saturday is our kickoff. We will be having a softball game at the church. Everyone, bring your softball glove. Family members are invited. We will be cooking out hot dogs. The troop is providing the hot dogs and the fixin's, chips, and drinks. If anyone wants to bring side dishes or deserts, they are always welcome, but not necessary. The fun starts at 9AM. Lunch will be served between 11:30 and 12, and clean-up should be completed by 1. Monday will be our first regularly scheduled scout meeting. Everyone needs to be at the meetings at 6:45, as we will be having activities before the meeting. Don't be late, or you will be missing out! The PLC has worked hard to plan the calendar for you for the year. The calendar on the webpage is updated with all the new activities, so be sure and check it out. Also, you can find the meeting plans for the next four weeks. There has been a lot planned, now all we need is for you to come join in on the fun. |

Identify all members of one team by tying neckerchiefs on their right arms. The ball starts in the hands of one team member, who tosses it to a teammate. The opposition tries to intercept the ball. As the first player catches the ball, he shouts “One!” and throws the ball to another teammate, who shouts “Two!” as he catches the ball. This continues until the number 10 has been reached. If a player from the opposing team intercepts the ball, he shouts “One!” and his team then tries to reach ten. As teams intercept the ball, they must always start over with the number one. Scoring: Each time a team makes 10 consecutive catches in a row, their team scores one point. First team to 6, wins. |
This past Saturday, April 17, Boy Scout Troop 856 hosted its first River Sweep. There were 37 participants in attendance. Lots of fun was had by all canoeing and wading in the creek while picking up trash. We hauled away a full trailer load of trash. While sweeping the area of trash, we also helped Ian Osborne, an Eagle Scout candidate in the troop, build a bridge along the walking/biking trail that runs beside Crabtree Creek. Significant progress was made toward completion of the project, and it is anticipated that the bridge will be completed soon. Pictures will be posted on the website soon. |
Current EventsCurrent EventsTonight, we will be having a Patrol Leaders Council Meeting at 6:30, before the regular troop meeting. I would like to have the SPL, ASPL, PLs and thier Mentors there if available. We only have 30 minutes, and a lot of material to cover, so please be there on time. There will be a Board of Review tonight. We know for sure that 2 or 3 scouts are ready to go up in front of the board. If anyone else feels that they are ready to go up in front of the board, you will need to contact either myself or Mr. Brock before 5PM today so we can make sure we have enough board members to accommodate scouts needing BOR's. If you wait until the meeting to let us know, you run the risk of having to wait until next month to sit for the board. Dixie Fellowship is this weekend. Those of you who are signed up to attend, you are reminded that a medical form is required for the weekend. Remember the Scout Motto, "Be Prepared." Summer Camp is upon us. Over the next few meetings, we will be taking up the money for camp, and signing up boys for their merit badge schedules. We will work with you to get your son signed up for his classes. For Summer Camp, your son will need a physical from a doctor within the last 12 months. Most everyone in the troop has completed the parent portion of the medical form, but most scouts and scouters will need to visit a physician before summer camp to have a physical. Physicals are required every year now. If you do not have a current medical form, schedule your physical now, and turn in your form to Mr. Brock as soon as possible. Tonight, April 12, 2010, there will be a committee meeting. All parents are invited and encouraged to attend. It will run from 7PM to 8:30PM while the troop meeting is taking place. Scouts, tonight the troop will be working on the Signaling Merit Badge. Come prepared to learn Morse Code and sending messages with flags. This merit badge is one of the four that is being offered in celebration of the BSA's 100th anniversary, and this is the only year that it is available to earn the badge. Make sure you are there for your opportunity to earn this historic merit badge. SPL call your patrol leaders. PLs call your patrol members. |

Meeting Reminder, Tonight there will be a committee meeting during the regular meeting time. All parents are encouraged to come to the meeting and participate. Please see the attached meeting agenda for a list of topics that will be covered. There is a camporee this weekend. If you are planning on attending the camporee, and have not already paid your registration fees, please bring your money tonight. The fee is $25 for youth, and $20 for adults. During tonights meeting, patrol first aid kits will be assembled for the disaster drill that will take place this weekend at the camporee. After the kits are assembled, an instruction session will be held to review the first aid procedures that will be encountered during the drill. After the instruction session, the patrols will be given an opportunity to practice their skills in a mock scenario similar to the one that will be encountered at the camporee. It is an important meeting, so we need everyone to attend. Senior Patrol Leader, make sure your Patrol Leaders call everyone to remind them of tonight's meeting. Neal |

We will have a sign-up sheet at the meeting tonight. Monies will be distributed based on number of persons who work the fundraiser, and how many hours worked. The next Board of Review will take place on March 1st. If you wish to go up for a Board, you will need to talk to Mr. Brock no later than next week, February 22nd so he can set up a Board for you.
