With school back in session, members of Boy Scout Troop 507 have a summer Caribbean sailing adventure to look back over.

Each year the troop plans a High Adventure trip for the older Scouts, and this year it was a week at the Boy Scouts of America's Florida Sea Base, where the six boys and two adults learned to crew a sailing ship.

"We were the crew for the ship," said Jon Allem, one of the adult leaders. "The boys handled the ropes and ran up the sails."

The group also had time for swimming, snorkeling, and fishing.

Whatever the boys caught was usually on the menu that night, Allem said.

"The weather was great," he said. "Most of the time we slept out on the deck, under the stars."

The group spent six days and five nights on the water, sailing along the Florida Keys all the way to Key West.

Allem said the group saw colorful tropical fish, corral reef animals, loggerhead turtles, bottle-nosed dolphins, and small sharks, and one of the Scouts caught a barracuda.

Adult leaders on the trip were Jon Allem and Terry Hare. Scouts were Bob Sternke, Michael Hare, Mark Allem, Ryan Smith, Aric Fisher, and Lee Fairless.
