April 4th Shakedown CANCELLED
This is the weekend camping list ONLY. For Summer Camp, see the Summer Camp Packing List!
The food needed depends on the trip.
For backpacking-related trips (even shakedowns/mock/practice) you'll pack your own food. What you bring in, you bring out. Some thing to think about: We tend to not recommend canned food because it is heavy, you need to open it, and you need to carry your can around in your pack the entire trip.
For some events (like lock-ins), we normally include the cost of food in the camping cost, so scouts don't normally need to bring food.
For regular, weekend campouts, we normally have patrols plan their meals and scouts and leaders shop together.
☑ Weekend Campout Packing Checklist (Printable PDF Version)
This is for weekend camping trips only. Summer Camp will have a different list.
☐ Clothes - The type of clothes you need will depend on the weather conditions, so pack accordingly!
The Basics
☐ Class A and/or B Uniform - Scout Master will let you know if you need this (it depends on the trip).
☐ Sunglasses
☐ Weather-appropriate clothing for every day (Always wear casual clothes you can get dirty!)
☐ Weather-appropriate hat
☐ Bring an extra pair of clothes & shoes (if possible)
☐ Extra socks for each day (Wear clean socks every day!)
☐ Rain Poncho
☐ Sleeping clothes - While you don't need the same type of pajamas you'd wear at home, you won't want to sleep in your sleeping bag with dirty, smoky clothes. Comfortable tops and bottoms will do.
Water Events - (Plan for water excursions like tubing and manatee trips.)
☐ Swimsuit & cover-up/swim shirt
☐ Water shoes (if boating or tubing)
☐ Beach towel
☐ Waterproof/floating phone case
☐ Goggles
Cold Weather - (This depends on the time of year! Keep an eye out on the weather!)
☐ Extra layers to keep warm
☐ Winter coat, gloves, etc.
☐ Hand warmers (Hot Hands, etc. come in many sizes)
☐ Bug Out Bag / Day Pack - The Bug Out Bag page has a list of all the essentials for camping survival, health, and comfort that go in your bug out bag.
☐ Medical - Our medical officer will help with questions and medical forms that are needed prior to events.
☐ Medication
☐ Personal Hygiene - What you bring depends on your personal needs. Avoid perfumes/colognes.
☐ Tooth brush, tooth paste, floss
☐ Shower items (soap, shampoo, etc.) Some campouts have access to a shower (flip flops recommended). Even if we don't have showers, scouts wash when possible during campouts and always have clean hands during meal times. Disposable / biodegradable wipes or wash cloths are great on the go! Ivory soap is biodegradable and inexpensive.
☐ Towel (microfiber towels dry quickly)
☐ Deodorant
☐ Additional personal care items such as hair care and other personal hygiene needs.
☐ Money - While scouts don't usually need any money during their camping trips, we do sometimes camp in places that have camping stores with camping supplies, souvenirs, drinks, and snacks. Remember... a scout is thrifty!
☐ Sleeping / Shelter
☐ Tent (can share based on gender and age)
☐ Ground pad or camping cot
☐ Sleeping bag (on really hot campouts, some prefer sheets only)
☐ Pillow (if you prefer)
☐ Other comfort/lighting items such as lanterns
☐ Meals
☐ You should already have your water bottle packed.
☐ Mess Kit
A mess kit can be as simple as a reusable plate and utensils. You can purchase metal or plastic mess kits, but you can easily just pack a small, (mesh is helpful) bag with your plate and utensils. Some also pack an extra cup in case there are other drinks (like juice) available. Scouts are responsible for washing and keeping up with their mess kits. Washing stations will be set up to clean dishes after each meal.
☐ If you want different drinks/food or personal snacks, pack those based on personal preference and length of stay. No food in tents!
